I can imagine how huge the Occupy movement would be if the head of state were a conservative Republican. The program has legs now, while a liberal Democrat holds office, though those legs might be a bit wobbly as unemployment dwindles a bit... Their problem, as I see it is that while they have legs, I see no head (there might be a very tiny one).
If Occupy has a problem with the distribution of wealth in this country, I'd like to hear a proposal that would improve matters, and if the solution tends towards socialism, I'd be interested to know upon which
model it would be based.

Sorry Tracy, but if all those yahoo's are worried about distribution of "wealth" then maybe they need to get their whiney asses off the "Occupied" turf and get a damn job. I'm sooo sick and tired about all of the boohooing from these people. The majority of these people are part of the problem.....NOT part of the solution. Ok....I can now safely put away my soap box.
I think the consensus the first consensus of the Occupy movement is a more fair tax code in which the top 1% are not getting huge breaks that do not balance out in a FAIR matter with the rest of the people who pay taxes.
I think the second thing that seems to be a goal is to revoke the idea that corporations are people and the idea that money equals free speech. Super Pacs and the messed up campaign contribution system is not working to benefit the country as a whole, but it's now a legal sway campaigns to elect officials that are supposed to be serving the citizens.

Now that doen't seem fair.

On the Occupy movement itself. . . If you feel powerless to change a messed up system, being that annoying gnat that won't go away is a pretty wise move. Even if you don't think so, it has gotten people talking about real problems and real solutions, and I think that's good.
I tend to side with the ONE problem as I see it,the rich are getting richer and the middle class has become the 'old' lower middle class? some say the 'rich' support the economy,fine,just make everyone pay a percentage of taxes on ALL gross income,NO loopholes. just TRY to get a fair paying job with benefits in Peoria!
I don't know about you, but I am getting sick of hearing the word "fair". Warren Buffet pays his fair share to the tune of millions each year. So do Bill Gates and Mitt Romney. They do get breaks...because they give tons to charity. They also pay a lower tax rate...on sales of stock. Stocks are purchased with money that has already been taxed.
Going forward the workers need to start with an understanding that things like pensions, health care, and organized labor are a thing of the past. The 21st century is about identifying a way of coping with those errors of judgement and crafting a present day solution. Retirees of today are the beneficiaries of the same pensions, Social Security, and Medicare that seemed like a good idea at the time, but currently tie one hand behind the back of budget makers.
I think this century need to have failures to set up successes (housing crash to stablilize housing prices, unemployed grads to lower cost of college and reduce the need for a degree, and possibly a near bankruptcy of the fed. govt. to acknowledge that drastic spending habits must be changed immediately).
I love this thread. Its obvious that the Occupy movement has something to gripe about. My take is that they not only fail to produce a plan to solve their problems but provide no manner in which to implement a cure.
I agree with Janet. They should quit whining and get working. I think there is plenty of wealth in the economy to go around for those will to go after it. Good example, look at Apples iPad and iPhone and the app market place. The tools to build apps and sell them are free and lots of people have made lots of money building and selling Apps for Apples iOS devices. All it takes is a good idea and brain power to do it. Problem is most people are not willing to work for it.
